Your Resume-DON'T FAKE IT!

Nobody expects to be fired or downsized.  Well, maybe nowadays it’s different…let’s rephrase that.

You should always prepare to be fired or downsized, it’s just a sign of the times.  That’s why it’s important to always have an updated resume ready to go.  Plus, you never know when an opportunity will knock.  Here are a few things to keep in mind…

Shorter is better.

Hiring managers are looking for a candidate snapshot, not a novel.  Keep your resume to one page, if possible.  Given the current state of the job market, your resume is likely one of hundreds stacked up in a file in the HR department.  You want to give a prospective employer a reason to set up an interview, then you can expound on your skills and experience in person.

You shouldn’t “spam” employers with your resume.  People hate spam, and by association, they’ll hate your resume.  Simple logic.  It will get you every time.

Know Your Audience.

Customize your resume for each individual job you pursue.  You should not only do this in your cover letter, but on the resume itself.  For example, a resume for a job as a pharmaceutical rep should read differently than that for a similar position at, say…a radio station.

Focus on your achievements instead of responsibilities.  Just because you were responsible for something, doesn’t mean that you were particularly good at it.  Demonstrate your effectiveness by showing what you’ve made, saved, or achieved.  It’s much more impressive to tell someone exactly what you’ve done, rather than what you were expected to do.

You should definitely use the power of the written word to make your resume stand out, but under no circumstance should you falsify information.  This is kind of a “no-brainer”.  Lying on your resume can cause all kinds of problems…plus, it would mean that your pants are on fire.

Do your research.

Visit the website of the company or firm to which you’re applying.  Learn as much as you can about their company culture, objectives, and business model.  Your prospective employer will be impressed with your knowledge and approach.  Above all, it shows that you’re genuinely interested in working for that particular company, rather than just needing a job.
